New venture launched for Port of Spain

The Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT), in collaboration with the Port of Spain South Community Sports Organisation, have launched a new venture for the development of sport in the Port of Spain area.

The new initiative was announced Thursday at a media conference at the St Paul Street Multi-Purpose Facility.

The theme of the launch was "The way forward" as it was a new phase in the development of sports in and around the so-called "slums" of Port of Spain.

The programme for sport will take the form of a round-robin tournament in various sports, including netball, draughts, cricket, basketball and football.

The tournament is expected to run for three months and will include teams from areas such as John John, Sea Lots, St Joseph Road, St Paul Street and Gonzalez.

This is one part of SPORTT's modus operandi of "the execution of programmes for total participation in sports", according to a press release.

It is also in line with the objectives outlined by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs in promoting a national sports policy "to increase the participation in sport and physical activities at all levels".

Hier wat informatie over het damgebeuren hier op het eiland. Van 7 t/m 15 oktober werd het Curaçaosch Junioren Kampioenschap gespeeld in San Marco Hotel. De eerste drie dagen werden er afval-wedstrijden in groepen gespeeld om naar een finale van 6 spelers te gaan.

De eindstand bij de jongens: Mijail Eisden werd kampioen met 9 punten hij speelde remise tegen Shayron Minguel.

Bij de meisjes: Vivian Troncon Kampioene met 10 punten. In de finale won zij al haar wedstrijden. Rishaira Giterson 8; Turani Lodriguez 6; Divianka Fransisca 4; Tamar de Windt 2 en Brettany Lourens 0.

Gelijktijdig met de twee laatste speeldagen van het juniorenkampioenschap en in dezelfde zaal werd ook het vierde jaarlijkse toernooi voor 60-plussers gehouden. Er deden 10 spelers aan mee. Het toernooi werd dit jaar gehouden ter ere van twee veteranen ( Johan Martier en Odulio Eustatia) die in het verleden veel voor het Curaçaosche dammen hebben gedaan. Het toenooi werd gesponsord door de heer Eisden van een constructie-bedrijf (2 plakkaten), Refineria Isla (trofeeën en medailles) en het San Marco Hotel. Hubert Borgschot werd kampioen, gevolgd door Henry Bernadina tweede en Ciro Felicia derde.

Aruba heeft ons vorige maand plotseling laten weten dat zij het niet meer zullen halen om het kampioenschap te organiseren.
Maar zij willen het kampioenschap van 2009 wel organiseren.
Op dit moment zijn wij met Guadeloupe, Suriname en Brazilië aan het kijken of het in Guadeloupe of Suriname kan worden gehouden en als het niet lukt toch maar in Brazilië. Volgende maand weten wij iets meer hierover.

Het 14de Pan-Amerikaans Senioren Damkampioenschap zal in São Paolo worden gehouden in de periode 23 februari - 4 maart 2007

Here you receive a little change in the dates of the 14th Pan-Am championship and some additional information. The championship will be played from february 24 untill march 5, so please note that the last round and the closing ceremonies will be on march 5 2007. (arrival dates are february 22 and march 23)
The players/coaches will stay in the Apolo Hotel(3 stars) in the center of São Paolo. Breakfast,lunch and dinner will also be in this hotel. The playing room is about 300 meters walking from the hotel. Please do not forget that only members/federations who have paid their FMJD- and/or PADCF membershipfees will be permitted to play and stay in the hotel. FMJD/PADCF membership fee is 250 euro's. Only PADCF membership fee is 100 euro's.

Wie het magistrale boek "One jump ahead" van Jonathan Schaeffer heeft gelezen over hoe het computerprogramma Chinook de wereldtitel in Checkers heeft veroverd, weet dat rond Ron King allerlei rare incidenten hebben plaatsgevonden (zetten terugnemen, stukken van het bord nemen bij afwezigheid van de tegenstander).

Dat boek heb ik niet gelezen. Van Ron King had ik tot juni 2001 ook nog nooit gehoord. Dat veranderde pas toen de doorgaans zeer koelbloedige Wieger op Curaçao helemaal buiten zichzelf van verrukking kwam vertellen dat Ron King zou meedoen aan ons damtoernooi.

One jump ahead is inderdaad een geweldig boek, het is met afstand het leukste boek over dammen dat ik ken (checkers in dit geval). Dankzij dat boek wist ik in Curaçao al het een en ander over de kleurrijke Ron King. In het boek staan veel leuke anekdotes over de belangrijkste checker spelers. Tijdens het toernooi in Curaçao vroeg Ron King mij nog of ik samen met hem op de foto wilde. Dat vond ik wel bijzonder, op dat moment was hij namelijk de regerend wereldkampioen checkers.
